The Context

The Platform Engineer role is essential to enabling faster, safer, and more efficient delivery across Vodacom DRC’s digital initiatives (Bespoke Application, RPA & AI). This role supports the creation of a centralized platform that empowers development teams to build and deploy solutions quickly, while ensuring that all systems meet the highest standards of security, reliability, and compliance

The Role

We are seeking a Platform Engineer to design, build, and maintain our Internal Developer Platform (IDP). This platform will be the secure, golden path for our development streams, providing self-service capabilities while enforcing strict security, reliability, and compliance standards across our mixed Linux and Windows environment. They will ensure that our infrastructure is robust, compliant, resilient, and free from vulnerabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Build the Internal Developer Platform (IDP):

•       Avail CLIs, and web UIs that allow developers to provision resources, deploy applications, and observe their systems.

•       Implement and maintain a comprehensive access matrix for all users and service accounts across VM environments, enforcing the principle of least privilege.

Security, Compliance & Governance:

•       Oversee vulnerability management: Proactively ensure that vulnerabilities on OS (Ubuntu/Windows) and containers are patched within SLA.

•       Ensure all VMs and containers are scanned regularly and are free from known critical vulnerabilities. Establish and enforce a strict SLA for closing vulnerabilities based on severity.

•       Lead the initiatives for updates, patches, and decommissioning plans for platform services and underlying infrastructure to ensure stability and compliance.

•       Partner with the Cybersecurity team to ensure the platform meets all industry and internal compliance requirements.

Infrastructure Reliability & Operations:

•       Oversee the backup and disaster recovery strategy for all critical VMs and data stores, ensuring alignment with defined RPO (Recovery Point Objective) and RTO (Recovery Time Objective).

•       Validate backup integrity and lead regular disaster recovery drills to ensure a fast and reliable restoration process.

•       Monitor infrastructure health, capacity, and performance, ensuring high availability and scalability for all platform services.

•       Manage our on-prem cloud infrastructure using Pulumi or OpenTofu, ensuring consistency and compliance across all workloads.

Unified CI/CD & Automation:

•       Design and implement a centralized, templated CI/CD system that can build, test, and deploy to both Linux and Windows environments, integrating security scanning into every pipeline.

•       Champion GitOps practices for Kubernetes deployments and Infrastructure-as-Code for all environments.

Containerization & Orchestration:

•       Manage and scale our Kubernetes clusters for Ubuntu-based applications and AI workloads, ensuring node security and compliance.

RPA (UiPath) Platform Support:

•       Architect the automation and deployment pipeline for the UiPath ecosystem, including the secure management and backup of Windows VM images and

Orchestrator configurations.

•       Integrate UiPath Orchestrator with the central platform for seamless credential management and auditing.

Monitoring, Observability & Reliability:

•       Implement a unified monitoring and observability stack that provides metrics, logs, and traces for applications running on Linux and RPA robots running on Windows.

Collaboration & Evangelism:

•       Work closely as a partner within the Bespoke App, AI, and RPA delivery to understand the pain points and gather requirements to improve the platform.

•       Create documentation, run workshops, and provide support to evangelize the use of the platform.

Qualifications & Required Skills

•       3+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Platform Engineering role.

•       Proven experience building and maintaining platforms in a multi-OS environment (Linux and Windows).

•       Demonstrable experience leading vulnerability management and patching, with a focus on meeting SLAs.

•       Proven expertise in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform is highly preferred).

•       Deep knowledge of Kubernetes and containerization (Docker).

•       Proficiency in designing and managing CI/CD pipelines.

•       Solid scripting and automation skills (e.g., Python, Bash).

•       Experience with configuring and using observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack).
